This photo collection is inspired by Lily Briscoe, a character from Virginia Woolf’s novel To the Lighthouse. Through these photos, my goal was to capture how I perceived Lily’s character. Lily Briscoe is a talented artist, who uses creativity in place of words to articulate her thoughts, emotions and personal experiences. Lily receives criticism from Charles Tansley, who declares women cannot paint. However, despite the external disapproval and her own internal insecurities, Lily continues to create art. Lily’s tenacity reminds me of the famous expression, “nevertheless, she persisted.” With brilliant minds and creative hands, women can create art.  – Grace Hilty
